The Minister of Communication, Dr Benjamin Aggrey Ntim in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Kwaku Ofosu – Adarkwa at the 8th European Organisation for the Exploitation of User Conference for Africa, has noted that climate monitoring is the necessary kingpin in deciding the drivers that will help accelerate Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Mr Ofosu – Adarkwa who is the Chief Director for the Ministry of Communication, observed that food security is fast becoming a major global threat that may endanger thousands of lives; adding that climate change could even have a worse impact on millions of people in developing regions of the world.
As policy makers he said the importance of EUMETSAT, in providing early warning mechanisms to support Meteo and Hydro Agencies to keep Governments and policy makers alert cannot be underestimated. Mr Ofosu Adarkwa hinted that adverse climatic changes coupled with the unavailability of enough food storage facilities and the over dependence on rainfall for agriculture could have the negative consequence of displacing people, causing hunger, civil strife and political instability.
The Chief Director said with Ghana and all African countries, striving to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015, EUMETSAT will ensure that the necessary mitigation strategies of countries such as Ghana’s Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS) policies will be tailored to arrive at these goals.
Ghana he said is prepared to offer sites to serve the interest of the sub-region and hoped that many more African countries would equally be prepared to do so. He called on the collaborative efforts of Heads of African Meteorological and Hydrological services as well as all stakeholders in promoting a sustainable environment.
The main objectives of the conference is to inform African users about the status and plans of EUMETSAT satellites, data and products in order to optimize the use of these data and products throughout the African continent, to strengthen the well established dialogue between EUMETSAT and its main user community in Africa especially the National Meteorological and Hydrological services and foster the use of EUMETSAT data and products for various application; especially in weather and climate forecasting.
EUMETSAT is an acronym that stands for European Organization for the Exploration of Meteorological Satellite; it has its headquarters in Germany. The conference brings together representatives of all Meteorological Agencies on the continent and the conference is under the theme “Use of Satellite Data for Monitoring Climate Change and Water Resources.”
