News: ABOKOBI GETS NEW POST OFFICE
Posted by: admin on Oct 14, 2008 - 10:26 AM
The Minister of Communication, Dr. Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, has reiterated government’s commitment to extending ICT access to underserved and unserved communities in line with the objectives of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) which enjoins member countries to promote universal postal access.

He made these observations at the launch of the commissioning of the Abokobi post office that happened to fall on World Post Day. The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘STAY CONNECTED’. “It is clearly a very challenging theme as today the postal industry globally is going through a period of dramatic change, when the old and traditional ways of delivering messages is steadily reducing due to the advent of technology.” The honourable Minister noted.

Dr. Agrey Ntim was happy to note that despite these challenges, Ghana Post still plays an indispensable role in the lives of Ghanaians, emphasising the noble objective of bringing people and nations together. “Postal service is a system that conveys people’s thoughts and feelings in letters, cards as well as parcels. In this regard we all owe it as a duty to make the industry stand the test of time.” He added.

Commenting on the use of the new Post Office at Abokobi, in the Greater Accra Region, he said, “We have provided this facility for the good people to have access to postal services.” Dr. Agrrey Ntim then urged the people to make maximum use of the facility.

The minister further noted that one of the major activities that the Ministry is undertaking to promote decentralization in the decision making process is the provision of ICT infrastructural support to enhance the development of adequate ICT services, without geographical limitations in this country to accelerate national development.

In this regard, he said Government has injected substantial capital into the development of postal infrastructure. Through the HIPC initiative alone, about 77 Post offices have been constructed and rehabilitated in several rural communities and have been upgraded in the process by the inclusion of ICT centres that will enable the youth to build on their innovative and technological capacities, for them to compete favourably in the global environment.

‘Furthermore, the Government is committed to providing the needed resources to build the infrastructure base that will effectively support ICT education in schools and the community at large.’

Dr. Aggrey Ntim expressed satisfaction at the Board and Management of Ghana Post for their initiative in confronting the postal industry which calls for technological innovativeness and transformation adding, “They have initiated several business models to respond to the challenges.”

As part of the efforts to satisfy the new technological requirements of customers, the company is on course in its computerization programme to improve upon the quality of service delivery to numerous customers, he explained.

“In this regard let me urge THE Post Management to continue to improve upon its innovative processes to enhance the provision of good quality service as well as expand the range of value-added services, more especially with the customer operations and the remittance service.”

Dr. Aggrey Ntim then called on the Ghana Post to take advantage of World Post Day, to assess their performance and reposition themselves in order to serve their numerous customers better; especially those in the rural areas who lack basic access to information.
