News: POSTAL SECTOR COULD BE A REVENUE GENERATING AND EMPLOYMENT INDUSTRY
Posted by: admin on Oct 23, 2008 - 08:31 AM

The Minister of Communications, Dr. Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, has reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring that government comes up with an appropriate policy framework capable of engendering a strong and dynamic postal sector, consequently promoting rapid economic growth.

This was contained in a speech read by Mr. Kwaku Ofosu-Adarkwa, Chief Director of the Ministry of Communication at a stakeholder’s Workshop for the development of a National Postal Courier Policy held at the British Council, Accra.

The Minister for communication said the postal sector is an important industry capable of generating revenue and employment across the country and beyond. Adding, the environment within which the post operates is not only changing but has become complex and competitive.”

Dr. Aggrey – Ntim attributed this to worldwide socio-economic trends such as globilisation, libralisation, privitasition, competition and the rapid changes in ICT.

The Minister said the workshop on the Postal and Courier policy is timely as Ghana is re-positioning itself to become a middle income country by 2015.He therefore charged participants to come out with a policy that is futuristic. “I wish to urge you to scan the horizon assess the potential of emerging technologies to promote technological innovativeness.

This he stressed should take place within a framework of universal access to postal facilities, the required need of protecting consumers and as well providing quality service, also creating a congenial environment to attract investors, to promote efficiency and competition and strengthening and broadening co-operation and interaction among stakeholders in the postal industry.

The Chairman for the occasion, Mr. Ransford Cudjoe observed that even though ICT is radically changing many aspects of our lives the Postal service continues to play a very important role. An efficient postal system should ensure that the rural folk are not left out.
Adding a policy that protects the weak from discriminatory practices compels transparency, fairness and good competition, noting such a policy sanctions deviant behavior.
