The Minister for Communications, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu on 10th November 2009, held bi-lateral talks with the Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Lula Fernando Serva. The Brazilian ambassador, whose country is among the 46 Member States out of 190 members who serve on International Telecommunications Union (ITU) council, commended Hon. Haruna Iddrisu for his able chairmanship during the just ended Council meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland from the 20th -30th October 2009.
H.E. Lula Fernando Serva, in his brief remarks noted that he monitored proceedings at the Council meeting and admired the cooperation that existed amongst participants at the meeting. This he noted led to the timely approval of ITU’s biennial budget for 2010 – 2011 and other agenda items brought before the council.
In response, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu commended Brazil for its informed contributions on the issues of Child online Protection, and safer Internet Environment for Children. He noted that the delegation of Ghana is equally challenged to contribute to the work of the Council Working Group to elaborate on the Strategic and financial plan in preparation for the consideration of the Plenipotentiary conference in October next year. On this score, the Minister and the Ambassador reiterated Ghana’s willingness to collaborate to promote ICT for development as the two countries share common views.
Touching on other bilateral issues, Ambassador Serva disclosed that Brazil was in the process of investing into a 27 hectare sugar cane plantation for the production of ethanol in Ghana. He said that the investment would yield close to US$80 million a month in export earnings. The production of ethanol he said would become the fourth foreign exchange earner for Ghana. He pledged Brazil’s commitment to the realization of this private sector led initiative as it would provide job opportunities for over 5,000 youth in Ghana.
