MIT, GTUC AND OAU PLEDGE TO SHARE EXPERTISE Articles / Date: Feb 20, 2010 - 05:41 PM A ten man delegation from the Ghana Telecom University College (GTU) paid a courtesy call on the Ministry Of Communications last Tuesday,16/02/10. The delegation was led by Dr. Osei Darkwa of the Ghana Telecom University College, President of the University, Dr. Osei Darkwa was accompanied by Dr. G.A Aderoannu who led a team from the Obafemi Awlowo University (OAU) and V. Judson of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who also led a team. Dr. Osei Darkwa explained that GTUC has existing bilateral relations with MIT and OAU aimed at building and replicating virtual education as well as iLabs and providing exchange programmes for students and lecturers between GTUC, OAU and MIT. He said the three collaborating universities meet each year in their respective countries to assess the progress of the relationship in a bid to evaluate the progress of projects in place. Dr. Osei Darkwa, further called on the Ministry to support GTUC’s initiative in pursuing its objective of establishing a virtual university where facilities like a virtual library, lecturers and infrastructure could be shared. Mr. V Judson Harvard, the head of the Center for Educational Initiatives of MIT on his part hinted that MIT is gradually moving away from bilateral relationships to multilateral relationships. Adding that, MIT has strong links in China, Australia and Africa. MIT he added is ready to share its expertise with universities in Africa and hoped that availability of bandwidth would be made accessible for the purpose. Dr. G.A Adenounmu also hinted that OAU has the biggest infrastructure of fibre optic connection of its own according to Nigerian standards which is being shared with some universities in the Northern part of Nigeria. The Chief Director of the Ministry of Communications, Mr. K.Ofosu Adarkwa who received the delegation on behalf of the Ministry lauded the collaboration of the three institutions and expressed the hope that the relationship would eventually involve other universities. Mr. Adarkwa noted that the ministry is interested in GTUC becoming an independent ICT institution of excellence with adequate infrastructure where others could tap unto. He reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of bandwidth at competitive price. With the landing of Glo 1 and others to the existing SAT 3 there will be enough bandwidth for use, he noted, and cautioned against redundancy which could lead to multiplicity of bandwidths.
